There are seven states that had been battlegrounds in the last few elections but which are now on the verge of losing their battleground status. Some have become more Democratic because of changes in demographics (see Nevada and New Mexico); others have become less of a battleground due to economic conditions (see Pennsylvania and Michigan). Some states were extremely close in the last couple of elections but are drifting consistently toward one party (see New Hampshire and Minnesota). Even though some were not close in 2008, all are still battlegrounds under different circumstances and none should be completely written off in 2012. However, it does appear that in the most competitive of environments, these seven states will still keep their same political shade.
